Houses are taking shape along Seventh Street in Gering Valley Estates.
Gering will have more senior housing available next spring as construction is on schedule for the new Gering Valley Estates.
Located on Seventh Street just south of D Street, the project consists of seven four-plexes in one- and two- bedroom units. Six units are handicap accessible and all utilities, excluding cable, phone and Internet, are paid. Washer/dryer hookups are included, along with refrigerator and stove. Both shower and tub units are installed in each unit.
Maintenance project director Rick Lehl said the buildings are laid out in an oval, allowing for easy in-and-out traffic access. Sidewalks up to the units will also be landscaped.
“It’s a green project, so the center court will be zeroscaped and the lighting will be energy efficient,” Lehl said. “This project isn’t the usual in that we’re using geothermal heat for the first time. We have no idea what the energy future will bring, so we wanted something that would work for the long term.”
The Scotts Bluff County Housing Authority is building the $4.3 million Gering Valley Estates, primarily with funding through federal tax credits.
“Construction is pretty much on track,” Lehl said. “Interior work is being done now and we’ll pour the sidewalks and parking lot once it’s warm, sometime in March. We should start leasing about the end of June or early July. We’ll try to have all of them leased by the fall of 2011.”
Units are available for lease to persons 55 years of age and older. There are also requirements as to income eligibility.
Interested persons may call the Housing Authority at (308) 632-0473 to be placed on the waiting list for the units.
