GERING — Zach Wiegert, a developer with the firm of Scott-Woodbury-Wiegert, has been in the old Sun Mart Supermarket before, but he was quite pleased with its transformation.
Wiegert, along with fellow developer Josh Bergerm were in Gering Friday for a meet-and-greet at the new Fresh Foods, owned and operated by Ben and Kerri Dishman.
“The Dishmans did a great job with the store,” Wiegert said. “It’s been a major transformation from the last time I was inside.”
He added the community should be proud to have a new supermarket in Gering after a seven-year absence.
“This store is as nice as we have in Omaha,” Wiegert said. “The aisles are nice and wide, they have good selection and great meat and produce.”
Wiegert said the developer has been involved in the project for about the last two years, but that’s typical in real estate development.
“It takes about that long, once you get all the deals worked out, contracts signed and everything ordered,” he said. “A lot of time on this project was spent selecting the right operator. Ben has a lot of experience operating a supermarket. Any supermarket is only as good as its management. He’s done a great job for Gering.”
At the end of the day, there was a drawing for Husker football tickets, footballs and mini helmets signed by Tom Osborne.
