A Gering Fire Department van in route to assist with a fire in Scottsbluff was involved in a crash on the Scottsbluff-Gering Highway with a van from the Scotts Bluff County Handy Bus system.

A van from the Gering Volunteer Fire Department was responding to a fire call at 27th and Ave. B in Scottsbluff this morning when it collided with a van from the Scotts Bluff Handy Bus System. The crash happened at mid-morning on Wednesday on the Scottsbluff-Gering Highway near Wendy’s restaurant.

Three people were taken to Regional West Medical Center following the accident, but none of the injuries appeared life threatening. Carol Prince, who supervises the Handy Bus program for the county, said their driver was treated and released. He was identified as 75-year-old Charles Haggard of Gering.

The fire department van, driven by 32-year-old Jeff Vance, was responding to the Scottsbluff fire when it struck the Handy Bus vehicle broadside as it was exiting from Wendy’s.

Northbound traffic on the Scottsbluff-Gering Highway was diverted for about three-and-a-half hours to allow for investigation of the accident.
