Residences from around Gering and Scottsbluff will be showcased this Saturday as Theatre West hosts its annual Garden Walk fundraising event.

One of the stops along the way is the home of Tim and Sandy Hebbert of Gering. Sandy describes the backyard as less of a garden and more of a jungle. And Tim described it as a quiet sanctuary.

The central feature of the yard is a large koi pond fed by a three-tiered waterfall. The pond is surrounded by ornamental grasses, purple winter creeper, and Colorado pine and cottonwood trees.
“My daughter was a softball pitcher and practiced in the back yard,” Tim said. “Once it became too small for her, I didn’t want to replace it with grass. So we started with a berm and little pond. It just grew from there.”

Tim said a lot of the plants came up on their own and he and Sandy just moved them around. And over the past 13 years, it’s become an extension of the house. “We just do a little bit each year,” he said. “You’d be surprised what you can get out of natural mulch.”
Mary Winn, co-chair of the Garden Walk committee, said they look for yards that are unique, that don’t look like they were landscaped by the same person.

“We really like diversity,” Mary said. “It’s interesting how the yards reflect the personalities of the homeowners. That’s what it’s really all about.”

This year is the first time the Hebberts have been chosen for inclusion on the Garden Walk. “It was really a compliment,” Tim said. “I never would have thought our yard was that special. But I like it and we spend a lot of time out here in the summer.”
Tim said another reason he’s supportive of the Garden Walk is that it supports the Theater West summer theater program. Tim has played numerous roles over the years in Theatre West shows, including “Working,” “Wizard of Oz,” “Annie,” “Big River” and his personal favorite, “Children of Eden.”

“Tim and Sandy helped make last year’s production possible,” Mary said. “They babysat their three grandsons so their daughter and son-in-law could be in the show.”

Tim also pointed out that two years ago, his oldest grandson was the youngest Theater West performer at the age of 3.
The 20th annual Theatre West Garden Walk runs from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 23.

Tickets are available for $12 from Gering Garden Center, Aulick’s TLC, ABC Nursery and Village Garden Center until Friday.
Tickets are $15 if purchased the day of the event, from locations including the YMCA and the Hebbert residence at 260 Cox Drive in Gering.

There are a number of coupons in the back of the program book to fill out for prizes donated by event sponsors.
