Girl Scout Abby Pieper helps carry boxes of Girl Scout cookies into the Gering Senior Citizen Center
Last Friday, local Girl Scouts showed up at the Gering Senior Citizen Center bearing boxes – Girl Scout cookies donated to senior centers around the region.
Cheryl Brunz, programs coordinator for the Aging Office of Western Nebraska said the state unit on aging was notified that 1,000 cases of Girl Scout cookies were to be distributed across the state through the state’s eight agencies.
“The Western Nebraska Agency got 80 cases of cookies,” Brunz said. “Local Girl Scouts dropped off 40 cases at the Scottsbluff center and 40 at the Gering center. They will be distributed to all 18 senior citizen centers in the Panhandle.”
Vic Walker, director of the Aging Office of Western Nebraska, said the donation was made available through a grant from the Peter Kiewit Foundation.
“It’s a very nice gesture,” Walker said. “I think everyone likes Girl Scout cookies. This also fosters relationships between generations and gives us all some exposure to what we do in the community.
“Out hope is that every senior participant of our home delivered and on-site meal program will get a box of cookies,” Brunz said.
“I really liked this project,” was the reaction of Girl Scout Kristen Knaub. “We’ll deliver some more cookies to other people.”
