James Butler Hickok, later known as ‘Wild Bill,’ was born the fourth of six children in the mid-spring month of May 1837 in Homer, Illinois. James’ father, William Alonzo Hickok was born in Vermont in 1801 and his mother, Polly Butler came to the continent from England in the late 1820s.
