On Sept. 15, thousands of rubber ducks will again take to the North Platte River for the 15th annual Rubber Duck Dash to raise funds for United Way of Western Nebraska.
For the past two years, winning ducks were drawn from a large pile because of high water conditions in the river.

“I went down to the river the other day and there’s enough water to float the ducks this year,” said Jeana Allen, special events coordinator for United Way. “The water level’s perfect, so we’ll be able to dump the ducks back in the river. And we’re excited to get back to the Trails West Camp for the event.”
The morning of Saturday, Sept. 15 starts at 9 a.m. with food vendors, games and activities for the kids. United Way will also be selling ducks, as long as they haven’t sold out.
The ducks go into the river at 10:30 a.m. for a 15-minute float back to the Trails West Camp.

“The first 30 ducks through the finish line will be our winners,” Allen said. “The grand prize this year is a convertible 2012 Chevy Camaro.”

Allen said sales start to pick up after Labor Day and their sales numbers at the county fair were higher than last year.
Last year’s Rubber Duck Dash raised about $60,000 to help United Way support service agencies throughout the community. She said they have 20,000 ducks for sale this year, and thanks to all their sponsors, expenses are covered so every duck sold goes to a good cause.

“We have the potential to raise $100,000, which we would love to do,” Allen said. “It would really help us reach our campaign goal. The more money we raise, the more agencies we can help, which benefits the community.”

In addition to the grand prize Chevy Camaro, other prizes include a 2012 Honda ATV from Sandberg Honda, a York Furnace installation from Gering Valley Plumbing, a Samsung 55-inch LED television, a Traeger grill, a Dell laptop computer and many other prizes.
