In the late afternoon of August 29, a dry storm moved through the northern Nebraska Panhandle in a region known as Pine Ridge country. Lightening strikes were fearsome and three major fires were ignited. A week later, over 200,000 acres had been consumed. One of those fires accounted for almost half of the total acres burned.
