All funds raised go toward the purchase of new Christmas lights and decorations for downtown Gering.

The second annual Make Gering Shine tailgate party is happening this Saturday at the Gering Civic Center.

Sponsored by the Gering Merchants, the event is a fundraiser for the City of Gering’s Christmas lights display. Last year, the Merchants raised more than $3,000 to purchase new high-intensity light bulbs for the Christmas decorations and on top of the buildings.
“This year we hope to raise funds to start replacing some of the light pole decorations,” said Merchant member Tom Cozad. “We’re also planning some new decorations for Santa Village.”

Cozad said the public is invited to decorate their vehicles and park them at the Civic Center during the event and prizes will be awarded for the best tailgate. Also this year is a fan dress-up contest with prizes for the best dressed fan.

The Nebraska Cornhusker football team will be playing Idaho State that day, so one of the day’s activities will be decorating potatoes. A bean bag toss tournament is also planned at 1 p.m. and two-person teams can enter for $10 for a chance to win a “Lil’ Traeger grill.

The Farm And Ranch Museum will be providing hayrack rides during the event. Ladder golf and other activities for the kids will also be featured.

The Make Gering Shine event starts Saturday morning at 10 a.m. and runs through 3 p.m. Burgers and brats will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., catered by the Meat Shoppe.

“We’ll also be selling raffle tickets that day for some great giveaway gifts,” Cozad said. “The actual drawing for that will be on Oct. 27 at the Steel Grill.”

Some of the raffle prizes include a Big Green Egg barbecue grill from Paul Reed Construction and the Rock Pile, a silver Gering 125th anniversary coin from First State Bank, a portable induction burner from Main Street Appliance, a Pamper Yourself package from The Lodge, a steak and wine basket from the Meat Shoppe, a gift certificate from Bentley’s Fine Jewelry and Repair, a Husker quilt from Prairie Pines Quilt Shop, a golf bag from the Oregon Trail Lounge and a Gering Bulldog hat and jacket from Logoz.
