With lots of community support, the Gering Merchants were able to raise about $1,650 during last Saturday’s Make Gering Shine event.
Now in its second year, the Make Gering Shine tailgate party is scheduled during the Husker football season to raise funds for Gering’s Christmas lights. Last year, the Merchants raised more than $3,000 to purchase new high-intensity light bulbs for the Christmas decorations and on top of the buildings.
The public participated in a beanbag toss tournament, hayrack rides, a tailgate decorating contest, face painting, pumpkin decorating and other events and games.
When added to existing funds, the Make Gering Shine account has about $4,000 for Christmas decorations, Donna Cozad, one of the event organizers, said there may not be time this year to order decorations, but they plan some for the 10th and M Street area soon.
“That’s a good location, as we have a new supermarket there now,” Cozad. “It’s also the gateway to the city for travelers from the east, west and south.”
During Saturday’s event, Merchants sold about $342 in raffle tickets. The drawing is scheduled at the Steel Grill on Saturday, Oct. 22. Raffle tickets are still on sale until the event.
Some of the raffle prizes include a Big Green Egg barbecue grill from Paul Reed Construction and the Rock Pile, a silver Gering 125th anniversary coin from First State Bank, a portable induction burner from Main Street Appliance, a Pamper Yourself package from The Lodge, a steak and wine basket from the Meat Shoppe, a gift certificate from Bentley’s Fine Jewelry and Repair, a Husker quilt from Prairie Pines Quilt Shop, a golf bag from the Oregon Trail Lounge and a Gering Bulldog hat and jacket from Logoz.
A Make Gering Shine account has been set up at US Bank to accept contributions.
