Tom O達oyle, activities director for Gering Schools, has been named the 2011 District Athletic Director of the Year for District 6.
The annual award is presented by the Nebraska State Interscholastic Administrators Association (NSIAA). A director from each of the association痴 six districts is honored, along with an Athletic Director of the Year.

The award is presented to activities directors who exemplify the highest standards of their profession and have used their influence on the lives of young people to make significant contributions to their high school and community.

典his is a recognition that makes me feel very good that my peers feel this way about me, O達oyle said.
There are 27 schools in NSIAA District 6, covering western Nebraska from Valentine west and south to Interstate 80.
Bruce Parrish, principal at Bayard High School, nominated O達oyle for the award. Gering has played host to several district and sub-district tournaments for schools around the region in a number of sports. O達oyle was also instrumental in starting the East-West Wrestling Tournament at Lexington.

的t痴 a challenge to find events that will work within our budget, O達oyle said. 典ravel is always one of our major expenses. Plus it keeps students out of class for the time we池e on the road.
He said that some of the Class B schools in the region are getting smaller. Ogallala recently dropped down a class into C-1. That adds to the challenge of maintaining a schedule that doesn稚 add to mileage or time out of class.

典hat痴 why the Wyoming schools are so important to Gering and other area schools, just because of the location, O達oyle said.
敵eographically it痴 tough for Class B schools in the Panhandle to make up those schedules.

He said travel time comes into play especially with sports such as soccer. There are two high school soccer teams west of North Platte. To schedule competition from eastern Nebraska, Gering must schedule many of its home soccer games at North Platte.

O達oyle will receive his award on March 9 during the NSIAA spring banquet at the Champions Club in Lincoln.
In addition to O達oyle, other district athletic directors of the year include Marty Hingest of Milford High School in District 1, Mike McMahon of Omaha Skutt High School in District 2, Randy Kliment of Creighton High School in District 3, Jim Kent of Dundy County-Stratton High School in District 4 and Gregg Holliday of Hastings High School in District 5. This year痴 state athletic director of the year is Robin Groene of Howells High School.

This is O達oyle痴 fifth year as Activities Director for Gering. 釘eing an activities director can be hectic because you deal on-site at the time with things that just come up, he said. 添ou have to make decisions on the spot. It痴 also very rewarding because you get to see a lot of different activities and all the different kids that are involved in all those activities. We participate very well on the state level here in Gering. I love the job and all the change that痴 a part of it.
