The Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED) announced on July 2 that Gering has been awarded a $30,000 grant for the first phase of its downtown revitalization program. Im thrilled about the news, said Karla Niedan-Streeks, executive director of the Gering Convention and Visitors Bureau. Its the next important step for Gering in revitalizing our downtown area. With the funds, we can hire a professional design expert to help us work out what that development will look like.
DED representatives were in Gering June 18 to tour downtown with local officials to determine whether Gering would be a project they could support.
With phase one completed, city officials will now apply for a phase two grant of $350,000. Those funds will help implement recommendations from the designer that will help bring new business and tourism to Gering.
