Gering High School will honor 134 graduating seniors at the school’s 120th annual commencement ceremony.
Gering graduation is scheduled for Sunday, May 23 at 2 p.m. in Cougar Palace at Western Nebraska Community College.
“Right now it looks like we’ll have three valedictorians and one salutatorian,” said Gering High School principal Eldon Hubbard. “The senior class had a great year. It seems that every year, the kids are mature enough and they show some leadership around the building.”
Hubbard said he goes into all the senior classes just prior to graduation and lets students know about the ceremony and what’s expected of them. “I’m impressed that late in their senior year, the students understand what I’m talking about.”
Speakers for the ceremony will be members of the graduating class. About five students have expressed interest in speaking. Students submit a rough draft of their proposed speech and Hubbard and the school’s speech teachers review them prior to selection.
“Gering High School always has the best kids in the world,” said counselor Jerry Becking. “We have great families in Gering and as a result we have great students. This is just another of those super classes this year. It’s a neat group of kids.”
Becking added the Class of 2010 has stepped up academically, athletically and have done a lot of good things in the community.
