Thirty-seven-year-old Richard "Rico" Cobos of Gering, who teaches junior high math in the Mitchell School District, has been charged with first degree sexual assault.
Gering police detective James Jackson said the 13-year-old victim was not a student in the Mitchell schools
“He had confided he had actually done it and he took off for Lexington,” Jackson said. “He was caught on Sunday in a Gothenburg at a hotel.”
Gothenburg police transferred Cobos to the custody of the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff and he was booked into the County Detention Facility on Sept. 4.
“The girl is 13 years old now, but she was 8 the first time he’s accused of assaulting her,” Jackson said. “That was in 2009 and 2010.”
According to an affidavit filed by Jackson with the Scotts Bluff County Court, the assaults began in 2009. Cobos had assaulted the girl several times in 2009 at his home, then two summers ago in Broadwater. Another incident happened in August 2012, again at the suspect’s home.
Jackson said he got involved last week when the incidents were reported to the Nebraska Health and Human Services assault hotline. In the affidavit, he said police were called by Cobos’ wife after she had been contacted by her mother about the alleged assaults.
Cobos has been charged with a Class 1B felony and could face from 20 years to life in prison if convicted.
