After losing four seniors to graduation, the young Banner County Wildcat wrestling team is showing some promise – but it is a rebuilding year.
“We’ve very young and inexperienced this year,” said Coach Bill Gifford. “We have three sophomores and three on freshman. Only one is returning from last year.”
Gifford said they’re going to experience their share of “lumps and bumps” throughout the season, but the team is buying into continually improving with each match.
“They’ve been working hard in practice, so I’m anxious to see how fast we can progress,” Gifford said. “It will take some time, but I think we have the ability to win some matches by the end of the year.”
Only two wrestlers have high school experience, so the team is also still learning to practice. Some of those sessions were cut short recently because of school activities and closures due to bad weather.
“I can see we’re progressing,” Gifford said. “We’re learning and I’ll see as we go along how fast we’ve come. I think we’ll be OK for the season.”
