Jill McFarland and Troy Cowan, Gering City Council members from Ward IV, are hosting a public forum on Thursday, April 3 from 5:30 – 7 p.m. at the Gering Citizen offices, 1447 10th St.
At their previous forum in the summer of 2013, both members agreed to schedule another in about six months.
“We haven’t been able to quite get it together until now,” McFarland said. “In light of developments for the proposed meatpacking plant, it seemed a very appropriate time to let people come in and tell us what they think.”
Both McFarland and Cowan have said they’re opposed to a plant locating in Gering, but admitted they could be wrong.
“We might have some people show up and say it’s good for employment and property taxes and that we should move ahead with it,” McFarland said. “I suspect that will be the main topic of discussion.”
She added they’re prepared to discuss the possible new library for Gering, the potential for a new downtown hotel, the recreation feasibility study, the downtown development grant and other topics.
“We have a lot of things going on right now,” McFarland said. “We’re open to any questions and we don’t come in with a specific agenda. This is a forum for people to tell us what they want to see.”
Cowan said the forum is open for anything people want to discuss. He’s currently doing more research on the status of the proposed meatpacking plant, but wants to hear what the people think.
“I hope we get lots of people to show up,” he said. “We want to hear from people in the other wards as well. We’re here for the people.”
