Third year Gering boys’ golf coach Keaton Green is looking at an improving team after last year’s best finish of 4th place at the Gering Invite, where Baily Hort and Austin Kaufman both earned medals.
Green said the team’s overall goals for 2014 are to lower our team average, place more golfers throughout all tournaments, and qualify team/individuals for state tournament.
“We are really working hard on slowing down, choosing good shots, and committing ourselves to those shots,” Green said. “We want to keep ourselves from making silly mistakes that cost us strokes on the course.”
There are 13 golfers out this year. Austin Kaufman is the only returning senior on the team. Green said he’s a good leader and has worked very hard to improve his game during the off season. Four freshmen join the team and each comes in with good golfing experience.
Green said he doesn’t have an assistant coach, but does receive a ton of help from Robert Thomason, golf pro at Monument Shadows Golf Course, and his father, who drives one of the vans when they travel to tournaments.
Looking at 2014, Green said he’s excited for the team. “As a team, I think we will be pretty competitive this year,” he said. “Most of the guys worked really hard on improving during the off season and I know it will pay off for us throughout each tournament.”
He added the tournament in North Platte was a good starting point for his team. “Once again, we find ourselves in a very tough district, and we know the district tournament will be tough,” he said. “We plan on improving throughout each week and playing our best golf at the end of the season.”
