Charles Badger Clark Jr. was born on the first day of January 1883, the youngest of four children born to Charles Badger Clark Sr. and Mary Ellen Cleaver. Charles Sr. had joined the 25th Iowa Infantry at the outbreak of the Civil War and was seriously wounded at Vicksburg.
