Copies of the Miss America cancellation stamp will be available through July 15 only
For those who missed the one-day-only special Miss America postal cancellation in Gering can still get a copy, but only through July 15.
“A special cancellation has to have a date, so we used the cancellation at the post office on June 15,” said Gering Postmaster Jim Casson. “For 30 days after that, people can request the Miss America cancellation by mailing in a postcard or an envelope with a stamp on it.”
Casson said that because the cancellation was for June 15, the post office can’t honor requests from the counter. All requests must be mailed to: Postmaster, Gering Post Office, 1050 P St., Gering, NE 69341.
Casson said his office wanted to offer a special postal cancellation to honor Teresa Scanlan of Gering, Miss America for 2011. So they contacted Gering artist Gretchen Peters to provide the artwork for the cancellation.
“The big part of the project was to get approval from the Miss America pageant organizers,” Casson said. “The pageant people wanted a few changes, so the drawing had to be revised before they would give their approval. The whole process took about two months.”
Permission from the pageant and from the artist then needed to be sent to the Postal Service’s retail division in Omaha for their approval before the rubber stamp is manufactured.
Casson said that had about 400-500 requests for the cancellation in their office on June 15. They’ve also received requests through the mail from across America and from numerous foreign countries.
“A lot of people who came in for cancellations on June 15 said this was a great way to promote our town,” Casson said. “The biggest single comment I heard all day long was from people who remembered Teresa carrying out their groceries at Plaza Foods.”
After July 15, Casson said the post office will prepare a special cancellation to present to Teresa and her family. It might be possible to present it to her during Oregon Trail Days, if Miss America is in town for the event.
