On Thursday evening, July 3, Gering resident Justin Allred and his family will continue a fireworks show tradition that now brings in thousands of spectators.
“Our fireworks show started as just a family get-together and got bigger each year,” Allred said. “Close friends started showing up, then friends of friends and it turned into big event.”
For the past three years, the Allred Brothers fireworks show has been held at Memorial Stadium, next to Gering Junior High School.
“I have a real passion for fireworks and celebrating everything that Independence Day is about,” he said. “I estimated that about 2,500 people showed up for last year’s show and I’d like it to be even bigger this year.”
When the fireworks show moved to Memorial Stadium, the Gering Music Booster Club contacted Allred about doing a fundraising event for the Gering schools music program.
“The Gering City Band plays at about 6 p.m. before it gets dark and that creates some interest for people who get there early,” Allred said. “The fireworks show also helps draw a crowd for them, so we feed off each other.”
The Gering Music Boosters will also have a fundraiser barbecue that evening, with hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill. Concessions are also available throughout the evening.
The fireworks show begins with the National Anthem at 8:45 p.m. and the rocket’s red glare starts at about 9 p.m.
Allred said the show is made possible by generous donations from the community and local businesses. Accounts have been set up at US Bank and Valley Bank in Gering to accept donations. People can also contact him at (308) 672-8593 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
