The public is invited to catch a wind at the second annual Bluffs Breeze Kite Festival, scheduled for Aug. 30 and Sept. 1 at Five Rocks Amphitheater south of Gering.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to sundown both days. Noah’s BBQ and The Snowie Bus will also be on site for refreshments.
The public is invited to bring their lawn chairs, sunscreen and their kites. Kites are also available for sale from the vendor. Easy flyers for the youngest kite enthusiast, Giant Flo-Tails and Deltas, dual line stunt kites and many others styles will be available.
“We probably had from 1,200 to 1,500 people who attended last year,” said Curt Giebler with My Wind Stuff. “As limited as we were in getting the word out, it turned out very well.”
Flying again this year is the giant 75x15 foot Rielet kite. Giebler gave an idea of the kite’s size, saying it’s 10 feet longer and two feet taller than a semi-truck trailer. And the 50-foot spiraling wind turbine will be available for the kids to run through.
Demonstrations and hand-on lessons in flying the dual line kites have also been scheduled. Sponsors include Premiere Kites, Scotts Bluff Area Tourism Bureau and Dietrich Distributing.
“Sherry Blaha with the county board persuaded us to do the festival last year,” Giebler said. “Every event needs a start, even if it’s small. But this one turned out really well.”
Giebler added the Scottsbluff-Gering area is a hub for producing various kinds of wind for flying kites. “Some areas have steady winds, but winds change all day long here. It’s kind of a unique wind and a challenging one, too.”
Giebler added that some kite festivals can bring in as many as 10,000 people, so he’s confident the Bluffs Breeze Kite Festival will continue to grow as a fun activity for the entire family.
