With a team of nine players, the Gering boys’ tennis team is looking forward to a competitive 2014 season.
Justin Reinmuth has coached the girls’ team since Gering implemented tennis as a varsity sport three years ago. This year, his duties include the boys’ team.
“We’re still in the early practice stages, but I’m really happy how the team has come together and are friends with each other,” Reinmuth said. “I’m also happy that some of the senior players are helping the younger players and showing them the game. It should help the younger kids become better players.”
This year’s boys’ tennis squad has nine members, with one senior and four players returning from last year.
“Our No. 1 and 2 singles, Alex Lupher and Jason Doll, have some experience and I’m looking forward to seeing them compete,” he said. “Alex has gotten a lot better with his game in the off season.”
Reinmuth said that while the singles positions are set, he’s still working with different combinations to see who will be on the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams. “This is my first year as the boys’ coach and I’m still getting familiar with what our competition will be like in the valley.”
Gering starts its season on Aug. 28 with a triangular at home, and Reinmuth said it’s always good to start out the season at home. Other matches he said were huge were the Scottsbluff, North Platte and McCook Invitationals.
“I’d like to see us finish at .500 in duals by the end of the season,” he said. “I’d also like to see us finish in the top three at one of the Invites. It would nice to medal in one of those events.”
Another goal is for a Gering player to make it to day two at the state tournament, something neither the boys nor girls have accomplished.
