The Banner County Wildcat football team is bringing back players who are experienced in the six-man game.
This is the Wildcats’ second year at six-man ball and school Principal Heath Johnson returns for his second year as head coach.
“We lost a couple of seniors to graduation last year, but we have seven seniors returning,” Johnson said. “I’m looking forward to their knowledge because six-man football is an entirely different game. It’s played with a different angle and I’m excited to see what they can accomplish.”
Johnson described all of his returning seniors as “fantastic,” including Tyson Dahlgrin, Kadan Huber, Mike McKown, Dalton Jordan and Bryce Olsen.
“Even in my first year as coach, they were pretty good football players,” he said. “Once they learned the art of six-man, it was exciting to see.”
He added he likes the team intensity he’s seen so far and the team comes to practice focused and ready to work hard. That includes a lot of ball handling drills.
“If the competition doesn’t want you to run a traditional offense, they force you into a spread,” he said. “We ran both last year and will do it again.”
The Wildcats start their season at home on Sept. 5 against a strong Maywood squad that Johnson called “a state championship quality team.” And Hyannis, who made it to the state championship game last year, visits Banner County on Sept. 26.
“I see a lot of talented football teams on the whole schedule,” he said. “We have a pretty solid line of opponents coming up and we’ll be challenged at good levels.”
