The McKibbin family in Bayard will have a busy fall season this year, as Micki McKibbin takes over as the new volleyball coach, while her husband, Randy, returns to coach the football team.
Although this is her first head coaching assignment, McKibben was an assistant at Bayard under last year’s coach Cindi Korell. She’s also been an assistant coach at Wolbach in eastern Nebraska, as well as a four-year assistant for Craig Schadwinkel at Gering.
“The team’s attitude and energy level has been great,” she said. “They want to improve all the time, so that’s a good thing.”
Four seniors are among the five returning starters for the Lady Tigers this year. Seniors Challani Parriot is the team’s outside and ‘go-to’ hitter who was named to All-Western Trails Conference honors last year. She will be joined by senior Brooklyn Kniss, junior middle hitter Miah Vera, senior Kristina McGann and senior setter Mandy Cottrell.
“All of the seniors and two of the juniors are all looking very positive,” McKibbin said. “I’m looking to improve on our 14-16 record from last year.”
In addition to facing strong teams like Mitchell, Gordon-Rushville and Leyton in the Western Trails Conference, Bayard will face some new squads this year. They are new members of the MAC Conference, which includes teams from farther east.
“It will be nice to see some different competition like South Platte,” she said. “It’s nice to see new faces and see if we can step up and compete.”
McKibbin said she wants to see her players grow as a team by the end of the season. “I’d like to see both our offense and defense have a productive season so we can add some new things on offense. I’d also like to see a winning record.”
The Lady Tigers have several tournaments on this season’s schedule, including Sept. 20 in Bridgeport, Sept. 27 in Mitchell and Oct. 25 for the Western Trails tournament in Mitchell.
Bayard opens at home this season as the Morrill Lions are in town. Match time is 6:30 p.m.
