The Scottsbluff boys’ No. 2 doubles tennis team of Jackson Frank and Owen Parra led the way as the Bearcats placed fifth as a team at last Saturday’s Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference tournament in Columbus. It was a close event, as two teams tied for third and Scottsbluff was a single point behind at 21.

“Our No. 2 doubles team took second place,” said Coach Maddie Burford. “Their only loss was to Kearney, which is a Class A school.”

Frank and Parra were 8-6 winners over Hastings and 8-2 winners over Norfolk before losing to Kearney 8-1. They quickly bounced back, stringing together four victories. They downed McCook 8-4, followed by an 8-2 win over North Platte, 8-0 over Columbus, finishing with an 8-5 win over Lexington.

“It didn’t surprise me that Jackson and Owen played so well,” Burford said. “They’ve been improving tremendously every invite we’ve played.”

As for the No. 1 doubles team of Brady Sindt and Soren Mercer-Smith, Burford said the GNAC event was the best invite they’ve had as a team, although they didn’t place in the top four.

“No. 1 doubles is a hard position to play,” she said. They’re two sophomores playing seniors most of the time. It’s been a tough year for them, but they’ve done a great job and are playing together as a team.”

No. 1 singles Sean Mercer-Smith took fourth. His wins were 8-3 over Norfolk, 9-7 over McCook, and 8-2 victories over both North Platte and Lexington.

At No. 2 singles for Scottsbluff was Eric Olsen, who went 3-4. “Eric was mentally prepared for the match,” Burford said. “He didn’t let a loss get him down and always tried his hardest.”
Scottsbluff was on the road again Tuesday for a dual against McCook.
