Rebecca Shields will serve a third term on the Gering City Council in Ward II after a very close win over challenger Kerri Schnase-Berge.

After the votes were counted on election night, Shields had a 288-283 lead in the race. However, provisional ballots still needed to be tallied.

According to County Election Commissioner Vera Dulaney, after canvassing the vote the following week, six provisional ballots were included into the final count. Four votes went for Shields and two went to Schnase-Berge. Shields was declared the winner by a seven vote margin: 292-285.

During the campaign, Shields said she was seeking a third term because she thinks transparency in city government is important and the council should be taking their cue from what the citizens want.
