Although they’re small in number, the Minatare Indian wrestling has been showing improvement as they get ready for the season.
“Because we’re a small Class D school, we don’t have a conference meet,” said head wrestling coach Gage Norman. “We compete at tournaments around the area from Imperial to Chadron and Southeast Goshen.”

Norman is now in his fifth year as head coach and his father, Mac, serves as his volunteer assistant. “It works out well because he taught me how to wrestle,” Norman said.

Norman said that because Minatare wrestling is more of an individual sport and not a team sport, his goals for the season remain the same – to get as many individual wrestlers to the state tournament as possible.

“I have high hopes for several of my wrestlers this year,” Norman said. “We have six returners and a freshman out for his first year.”
Returning seniors for the Indians are Marc Cinocco, who wrestled his way to the state tournament as a sophomore. He’s joined by fellow returning senior Jerrick Ross, who Coach Norman calls a “go-getter.”

“The tournament we really like to wrestle in is the Chadron Invitational,” he said. “Schools from four states compete in that one. If we do well there, we’re in a good position to head for state.”

Norman said that while the team is small, he enjoys seeing them improve with each match, place higher and see their skills progress.
Norman mentioned a foreign exchange student he had several years ago who had no wrestling experience. The novice wrestler’s first goal was to not get pinned. Then it was to keep the point spread smaller. And toward the end of the year, he was winning several of his matches.

“The team is looking really well so far,” Norman said. “We’re further ahead than we were last year at this time.”
