SCOTTSBFLUFF – The play’s the thing according to Shakespeare; however, casting is the current focus for Theatre West’s upcoming season-opening production of Our Town, by great American playwright Thorton Wilder.
Told through a mix of narration by the character called “Stage Manager” and episodic flashbacks, the play recounts turn of the century life in a small, fictional New Hampshire town called Grover’s Corners. The story centers on the Gibbs and Webb families, particularly on young Emily Webb and George Gibbs who fall in love and participate in the traditional human rituals of courtship and marriage, the overlying theme being the transitory nature of human life.
Characters yet to be cast are residents of the town such as the milkman, paperboy and others.
Theatre West Executive Director Judy Chaloupka said the play will open on May 27, with rehearsals beginning on May 4. “Rehearsal times will be a bit different for this production due to some unique scheduling demands,” said Chaloupka, “early rehearsals will be held from 4-9 p.m.
Chaloupka seeks community actors to play eight male roles and five female roles. “Some of the roles have anywhere from two to four lines, so it’s a great opportunity for someone to get their feet wet in theatre with a smaller role,” said Chaloupka.
The Theatre West season will feature three summer productions this season: Our Town, Godspell and The Addams Family.
Our Town performance dates are set for May 27-29 and June 3- 4, 7 at 7:30 p.m., with one matinee performance scheduled on May 31 at 1:30 p.m. Those interested in being part of the Our Town cast can call Judy Chaloupka at (308) 635-6794 or email email@example.com
