Gering’s Union Bar, affectionately called “The U,” has been named as mixing the best Bloody Mary in the state.
Some 1,100 bars and restaurants were invited to the second annual Nebraska Bloody Mary State Championship, held last weekend in Nebraska City.
Union Bar owner Scott Swanson said about 20-25 teams showed up for the event, which drew more than 1,000 people.
“We were eligible to compete in four categories,” Swanson said. “The best judged category, the best garnish, best presentation and the people’s choice award.”
After more than 1,000 people voted, Union Bar won the Best Bloody Mary award and also best presentation and best garnish.
“I went down there will my SUV packed with what we’d need,” Swanson said. “We served Bloody Marys for three hours and there wasn’t much left when we finished. The category I really wanted to win was the people’s choice award.”
For the last two years, the Union was voted as serving the second best burger in the state. They've also won two first place and one second place awards for their prime rib.
“I’m actually kind of humbled by the awards,” Swanson said. “To me it says a lot about the Union Bar and how we run things. We try to do everything as well as we can, and I guess it shows by the awards we’ve received.”
