Kevin Mooney, longtime news director at KNEB Radio, was presented with the 2015 “Tourism Buddy Award” by the Gering Convention and Visitors Bureau (GCVB) during the group’s annual meeting and luncheon at the Gering Civic Center.
Gering is Kevin’s home,” said Karla Niedan-Streeks, GCVB executive director, but tourism locally, regionally and statewide, as well as our communities in generally have benefitted from his service and many other contributions. He’s a true friend of tourism and our community.”
Mooney is well on his way to recovery after suffering a heart attack on March 11 that required quadruple bypass surgery.
“I didn’t know it would take a heart attack to get one of these awards,” Mooney told the group. “But I’m not going to have another one to get another award.”
He said all the media take tourism seriously as one of the state’s major industries. “I’m sure I’ll be doing a lot more tourism stories in the future. We all do a pretty good job of it and we’ll try to do even better.”
He also thanked everyone for their thoughts, prayers and well-wishes during his recovery. “I am getting better and I’ll be asking for more strokes once I start playing golf again. Just so you all know.”
Mooney joins previous "Tourism Buddy Award" winners Tom Cozad, Rick Myers, Ken Mabery, Barb Netherland, Rick and Judy Keller, Jodi Ruzicka, Nancy Haney, Darrell Bentley and Craig Lind.
