Gering, Scottsbluff and Mitchell golfers packed their clubs and headed north last week for the Western Conference Meet in Chadron and Scottsbluff came away with the win.
“Four of the kids just got back from the DECA convention in Florida, and I don’t think they got a lot of sleep,” said Scottsbluff Coach Mike Klein. “It wasn’t anything great, but everybody played decent. With all the activities going on, they played better than I expected.”
Scottsbluff won the Chadron Invite with a team low score of 317. Bearcat Jared Pilkington took first place with an individual score of 77.
Teammate Koy Potoff was two strokes back at 79 for third place in individual scoring. Jonah Wright carded an 80, Bailey Hort was at 81 and Sean Mercer-Smith came in at 85.
Gering placed fourth as a team at Chadron with 358 points. While none of them placed in the top 10 individual scores, Mason Marsh was first at 86. Grant Maser and Kraiger Ebbers both carded an 88, while Alex Lupher shot 96 and Logan VanArne at 101.
“I was hoping to finish better than fourth as a team,” said Gering Coach Keaton Green. “That was also our conference meet. Overall, our scores were higher than we wanted.”
Green added that on the bright side, Mason Marsh carded a 37 on the back nine in placing first for the team.
“The team knows they need to improve their scores if they want to be competitive at the district meet,” he said.
Scottsbluff has a busy week ahead. Today (May 7), the team will cross the river to play in the Gering Invitational at Monument Shadows Golf Course. From there, the team heads down the road to spend the night in North Platte. The next day they’ll be in Lexington for the GNAC tournament.
Both Gering and Scottsbluff wrap up their regular season on May 14 at the Ogallala Invitational. Districts are scheduled for May 18 in Sidney.
Other teams seeing action over the weekend included Mitchell, who was at the Chadron Invite on Friday and the Western Trails Conference Golf Tournament on Saturday at Legend Buttes Golf Course in Crawford.
At Chadron, Mitchell posted a team score of 441 and missed the top 10. They were led by Seth Marcoe, who carded a 97. And the next day at Crawford, Mitchell ended up in fifth place with a 437 team score. The Tigers were again led by Marcoe, who finished in eighth place with a 92.
Also competing at Crawford was Morrill. The Lions were led by Zach Larson with 99. Isaiah Gomez carded a 103 and Erika Derr came in at 129.
