Merchants host tailgate party to 'Make Gering Shine'

Both Nebraska Cornhusker and Wyoming Cowboy fans are invited to joint the Gering Merchants this Saturday for a Battle of the Borders Tailgate Party.

The Gering Merchants Association and the City of Gering will host the event in the east parking lot of the Gering Civic Center on Saturday from 11 a.m.–4 p.m., just prior to the Nebraska v. Wyoming football game.

The event is a fundraiser to assist in the purchase of new Christmas lights for downtown Gering. There are games and activities that will be fun for the entire family.

Music will be provided by the Drivin’ Dynamics and lunch will be prepared on the big grill.

A ladder golf tournament, football toss, hayrack rides, cheerleaders, a bouncy house and five hours of food and fun for all ages will be part of the activities. Many Husker items, including apparel and flags, will be available for purchase. The theme of the tailgate party is “Make Gering Shine.”

Big Ten Raffle tickets will also be available at the event. A drawing will be held Oct. 29 for Nebraska-Iowa football tickets, a big screen television, which will be displayed at the Gering Citizen until the winner is announced, and many other exciting items.

“This is a fundraiser to help with the cost of replacing about 6,000 light bulbs along the rooftops of the downtown buildings,” said Gering Merchants President Darlene Tagler. “We’ll also be updating the Christmas lights that hang from the light poles.”

Tagler said the merchants group came up with the idea after numerous people said that last year’s Christmas lights were so dim, many people didn’t know they were lit.

“Once we get the Christmas lights upgraded, we’ll use the money we raise to spruce up other areas,” she said. “We might include some planters and benches in front of some of the downtown buildings.”

Tagler said she’s hoping for a big turnout and they’re ready with food for 400 people. “We’re also inviting our Wyoming fans to come over and join us for an afternoon of fun.”

Donations for downtown Christmas lights can also be made at US Bank.
Event sponsors include Ed Mayo, Kevin Sandberg, Prairie Pines Quilt Shop, Johnson-Cashway Lumber, Julie’s Antiques, Union Bar, Dietrich Distributing, Wills Chiropractic Clinic, Playhouse Fun Center, Gering Bakery, the City of Gering, Heritage Estates, Masek Golf Car Company, USave Pharmacy, Leithead’s Appliance, the Gering Merchants Association, the Meat Shoppe and Valley Bank and Trust.

Raffle tickets can be purchased for one dollar from any Gering Merchant Association member and in participating downtown Gering businesses.
