|Monument trail closed for several days|

The Saddle Rock Trail at Scotts Bluff National Monument has been closed until further notice due to hazardous conditions.
Ranger Lesley Gaunt said the rock slide that earlier closed the trail has been cleared, but they are still concerned. “There are areas above where the rock is very cracked,” she said. “Some of it looks like it’s hanging on by grass.”
Gaunt said that recent rains have saturated the porous sandstone, making it more susceptible to cracking and breaking off.
“Our maintenance people are recommending the trail remain closed until we have about a week of dry weather,” she said. “Things might change, but we don’t want to put anyone at risk.”
So until further notice, the Saddle Rock Trail will be open only to Scott Spring. Check the monument web site at nps.gov/scbl or their Facebook page for the latest information.
