This Saturday, kids of all ages can have a fun day at the Riverside Discovery Center while helping people in need.

I Can … YOU Can … WE Can is hosting Family, Fur and Fun on June 13 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Riverside Discovery Center. Canned and non-perishable food items may be redeemed for tickets to the numerous events planned for the day. And all the food items help stock the shelves at Our Lady of Guadalupe food pantry.

Admission is $5 and one canned good for adults. For kids age 5-12, admission is $4 and one can. And for toddlers age 2-4, it’s $1 and one can. Lunch is also available for five tickets, which included hot dogs, chips, a drink and a cookie.

Some of the activities planned include glitter tattoos, face painting, gravity art and a bounce house. The Snowy Bus will also be there, along with Big Red Popcorn. There’s even a special appearance by Herbie Husker, sponsored by Champion Realty.
“We usually have our canned food drive in October through December,” said program coordinator Jill Pleick. “But we found the Guadalupe food pantry was empty a lot during the summer months. So we decided to help them out.”
She added the zoo also has their new Dino Dig open, along with the splash pad and the petting zoo. “We just want families to come out and have a great day to help a good cause. It’s good for everybody.”
This is the second time the program has been held in conjunction with the zoo and also the fourth year the I Can … YOU Can … WE Can program has been in operation.

Pleick, who works at Gary’s Cleaning and Restoration Services, said the first year the company offered a discount on carpet cleaning for people who brought in at least 30 cans. Other businesses heard about it and wanted to get involved as well. So they also offered incentives for canned food donations.

“We chose to support Our Lady of Guadalupe food pantry because they really need support,” she said. “They help a lot of people in the community.”

Again this October through December, the group will be gathering more canned and non-perishable food items for the food pantry.
