The Gering Bulldogs volleyball team won four out of six matches Friday and Saturday at the Twin City Invitational with eight regional teams playing in Gering and Scottsbluff, getting knocked out of placing with the early losses.

In a tough first day, due to seeding based on wins-losses, the Bulldogs (11-14, 2-1 in district) sandwiched a win against the Lexington Minutemen in two sets. In the early match, Gering faced Rapid City Stevens Raiders, losing in two sets. In the afternoon, Gering then lost to the Chadron Cardinals in two sets.

“We really didn’t play all that well,” said Gering Head Coach David Lashley. “We struggled with our passing, which is something we normally do well.”

Lashley added, “Our lack of height continues to rear its ugly head, and we have to find a way to get by that. We were getting more blocks earlier in the season and right now we are not getting those. I’m not sure what we are doing different, but we have to fix that.”

In the second day, Gering downed all three opponents, each one in two sets, starting with the McCook Bison, followed by wins over the rival Scottsbluff Bearcats, and another win over Lexington.

“We played a lot of tough teams in early season tournaments in Gillette and Gothenburg. We play the tough schedule to make us better, but it really hurts our win-loss record. (On the second day in the round robin tourney), our kids maintained a good level of play and won some matches. We had the chance to play some of younger kids which is always good.”

Also according to Lashley, tournament seeding landed Gering in a tougher pool. He suggested activities directors think about adding strength of schedule as a factor. “It would be a little better idea,” he said. “Or, (Gering) needs to quit playing such a tough schedule. The tournament itself needs some work. The coaches are going to need to get more heavily involved in setting up this tournament in the future.”
