Scattered lightning and rain late in the first quarter of Gering’s home stand against the McCook Bison sent fans for the exits Friday night.

As a result, both teams decided for safety sake, to suspend play with 2:27 left in the first quarter, dropping Gering to 0-6 on season, while the Bison (5-1) recorded a 14-0 victory over the Bulldogs – technically a forfeit by Gering. Even though Mother Nature shortened the game by three quarters, Gering still managed to honor several players for Senior Night before the start of the game.
Players in their final year include Austin Hoffman, Sonny Salazar, Brent Barge, Nolan Nelson, Antonio Murrillo, Deion Contreras, Chris Bartow, Brendon Brester, and Frank Billie.

“I decided to forfeit because the field was not getting any better and the rain was going to continue for at least another hour,” said Gering Head Coach Todd Ekart. “I thought in the interest of the player’s safety that we call it. If there were playoff implications on the line I may have come to a different conclusion.”

Although Gering’s losing streak extended to 19 games, Ekart said the Bulldogs will work “on becoming better at the fundamentals for this week – lot of blocking and tackling.”

At the shortened game Friday, the Bison shot out to a two-TD lead on scores by senior running back Joe Schlager. The first strike came during a one-yard run on their opening drive, followed by a 32-yard gash to cap off McCook’s third drive.

Tallying no first downs, the Bulldogs struggled to get their offense going, and punted on all of their drives. Contreras brought some life to the crowd, when he intercepted junior QB Easton Gillen’s pass, stopping McCook during its second drive.

Next Friday Gering will go on the road to play the Alliance Bulldogs in a B8 District match-up. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Last week, Alliance fell to Adams Central (Hastings), 14-7.
