The Gering volleyball team wrapped up its final game of the season against the Ogallala Indians last Tuesday night on the Bulldog campus.

The Indians owned the gym, defeating Gering in three sets. With the loss, the Bulldogs end their season with a 15-21 record and remain in the thick of things in districts at 3-4.

“I thought that we played better then we have in about
3 weeks and I am hopeful that we are pulling our way out of the quagmire that we have been in, Coach David Lashley said.
“The players put together a very solid effort against a very good team.”

Lashley added, “This is definitely a good step toward a solid performance at districts next Tuesday. Our seniors, Allie Boggs, Abby Kiesel, Jade Riedel, Sara Schwartzkopf, and Lauren Shaul played their last match on their home floor tonight and it was good to see them go out with such a solid effort.”

In the weekend prior to the last match at the Alliance Tournament, Gering stayed competitive against Alliance and Chadron, but only managed to win over Dundy County-Stratton. Against the Bulldogs of Alliance, Gering stretched the match to three sets, while falling in two sets to the Cardinals. Gering defeated the CD-S Tigers in two sets.

“We played good at times but we have really hit a slump and cannot seem to get out of our own way,” Lashley said.
“The players continue to work hard, but just make way too many mental errors. Sometimes I think they are almost trying too hard to make things happen instead of letting the game come to them. We will continue to work to make our play better and more consistent. Our season took a hit at the Gothenburg tournament and then really hit the skids after our loss to Scottsbluff on Oct. 15.”

Last Thursday, against the Bridgeport Bulldogs, Gering lost the non-conference match in three sets, 25-21, 25-18, 25-21.
Against district foe Sidney on Oct. 20, Gering lost to the Red Raiders in four sets.

“I know I must be sounding like a broken record right now but we’re really struggling to find our game again. We just seem to be getting worse every match. We are not hitting the ball very well and at times seem confused on defense. We will continue to work at correcting.”

Lashley added, “This is a group of kids that no matter the situation they continue to play with everything. We are making mistakes but we are giving 100 percent. We will get this fixed because we have players who are mentally tough and a strong desire to succeed. It’s been a long season, but we will overcome it and get this back on track.”

Next, Gering heads to the B District 8 tourney on Nov. 3 in second place behind Sidney, followed by Scottsbluff and Alliance, respectively.
