Lauren Shaul, one of the senior graduates from the Gering Bulldogs volleyball team, has signed to play as a defensive specialist for Western Nebraska Community College next fall.
“I wanted to continue my volleyball career after graduation, so I thought WNCC was a good choice,” Shaul said. “They have a great team.”
WNCC finished runner-up to College of Southern Idaho as NJCAA national junior college volleyball champions this past season.
“It’s really exciting to play at WNCC because I went and watched them at nationals and that pretty much sealed the deal,” she said. “It was exciting to see how far they went.”
From watching her future team in the national tournament, she already knows what to expect when she becomes a Cougar next year and the level that her game needs to be.
Shaul finished her senior season with 204 kills in 100 sets played. She also had 17 aces, 100 blocks, and 394 digs.
“I love the game in general,” she said. “It’s very challenging but also very rewarding in the end.”
Shaul said she’s also excited about playing again with former classmate Kaylee Spreier, who will be a sophomore next season.
Shaul added one of her favorite moments was winning the B-6 district tournament her junior year. She’s also miss her friends and the relationships they’ve made as teammates. “I will miss playing high school volleyball in general. I have been here for four years so it is kind of hard to leave.”
Many Gering graduates have gone on to play college volleyball at WNCC, including recent graduate Santanna Mitchell, Morgan Broussard, Whitney Roth, Brooke Blomenkamp, Sierra Schmidt, and Stacie Meisner
Gering volleyball Coach Dave Lashley said Shaul was one of their leading back row players and is a great passer. “She has a lot of good attributes to bring to the game and she’s also a very hard worker. She does whatever is necessary to become the best she can be.”
WNCC Binnie Canales said he’s impressed by Shaul’s athleticism. “She’s very coachable and moves well. She’s a very good passer and we expect some great things from her on the team.”
