Performers from past shows during the Theatre West Summer Repertory season will return to share their talents with the community at Broadway in the Bluffs.

The musicale, now in its 16th year, is the primary fundraising event for the Theatre West summer season.

Theatre West Executive Director Judy Chaloupka said they invite performers from past seasons to return to share their talents. Those performers come from both the local area and around the region.

Local singers who will perform include Tim and Matt Hebbert, Darla Heggem and Martha Rawlings, among others. Gering graduate J.J. Longoria, who was in Theatre West’s production of “Rent” in 2011, is coming from Omaha for the event. Wyoming residents Colter Schmidt and Kyleen Smith, who first appeared in “Godspell” last season, and Dusty Hall, who played the role of Lurch in “The Addams Family Musical” will also perform.

Chaloupka said the Theatre West board is putting together a well-rounded musical venue, featuring ballads, solo work, some duets and even some comedy. With Maren Chaloupka as musical director, performers will share some of the big Broadway tunes as well as some other pieces which might be a little unfamiliar to the public. Usually, about 20 performers share their talents at the fundraiser.

Judy Chaloupka said the musicale runs about 90 minutes and is followed by what she called a “beautifully decadent chocolate dessert buffet.” Performers will be there as well to meet with theatre-goers.

“We come close to selling out every year,” Judy Chaloupka said. “That tells us it’s still a popular event. I know the performers always enjoy visiting with the people.”

Auditions are also scheduled for February for the 2016 Theatre West summer season, performed in the WNCC Little Theatre. One of the shows even has a chocolate theme.

Two musicals are being planned for the summer – “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” and “The Buddy Holly Story.” Between the two musicals, the season will also feature a musical tribute to Andrew Lloyd Webber, composer of numerous Broadway musicals, including “Phantom of the Opera.”

The schedule is different as well. Each show will run for three weeks, rather than the usual two weeks. “We want to give more people more opportunity to find time in their busy summer schedules because I know the area really enjoys musicals,” Judy Chaloupka said.

Broadway in the Bluff is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016, at 7:30 p.m. in the Little Theatre at Western Nebraska Community College.
