Friends of the Robidoux Trading Post will continue to operate the trading post site in Carter Canyon for the next 20 years under a renewed lease agreement with the property owners.
The agreement needed to be updated after an error was found in the legal description of the property. Also, the original property owners where the trading post sits are now deceased.
The renewed agreement corrects the legal description and updates the names of the current property owners. The new lease term of the agreement is 20 years.
Robidoux Trading Post serves as a tourism attraction under the umbrella of the Gering Convention and Visitors Bureau (GCVB).
Bureau’s Executive Eirector Karla Niedan-Streeks told a special meeting of the Gering City Council that the Friends of the Robidoux Trading Post was formed two years.
The Friends group was joined by local historians, landowners, representatives of Scotts Bluff National Monument, among other interested persons.
“The group was formed to take over the responsibility for repairs and maintenance of the trading post,” Niedan-Streeks said. “GCVB and Scotts Bluff Area Tourism Bureau both have line items in their budgets for support of the trading post.”
Niedan-Streeks said the group’s by-laws and a mission statement allow the Scotts Bluff National Monument to use some of its historic preservation funds to help with overall maintenance of the trading post.
Some major repairs are being planned for the spring, including replacing old chinking between the building’s logs.
