Frank Marquez/Gering Citizen Gering’s Deion Contreras at 145 pounds takes on last year’s state champion Ben Rodriguez, losing a 9-4 decision. This is Contreras’ first year wrestling.
Scottsbluff overpowered Gering in a 52-15 shellacking of the Bulldogs in a rivalry match between the twin cities at Scottsbluff High School gym Tuesday night.
The Bearcats won the first four matches to build a 15-0 lead over the Bulldogs and never looked back. At 152 pounds, Antonio Murrillo picked up a decision 3-2 over Pablo Cervantez, getting Gering on the scoreboard. Murillo gave Gering fans a scare when he gave up a takedown late in the third, thinning an already narrow lead.
In the previous match, at 145 pounds, Gering senior Deion Contreras gave last year’s state champion Ben Rodriguez fits. In his first year of wrestling, Contreras kept the match close, trailing by two points after two periods, 6-4. However, Rodriguez, relying on experience, pulled away in the third period winning the match 9-4.
Gering picked up forfeit wins at 160 pounds and 182 pounds with Carmelo Ozuna and Quintien Onstott raising their hands in their respective matches.
Gering closed the gap to 25-15 after eight matches, including the 170-pound battle between the Bulldogs’ Cody Ybarra and Elijah Blanco, who wrestled up from 160.
Ybarra led through two periods, working for risky throws, gaining valuable back points, but keeping Blanco in the match by giving up points on reversals.
The score was knotted at 11-11 at the end of regulation. In heartbreaking fashion, Ybarra lost by takedown in sudden victory 13-11.
Gering lost its remaining four matches, three of them by falls.
At 220 pounds, Keegan Wurdeman gave Bulldog fans momentary hope, managing to go the distance against Scottsbluff’s Luke Ferguson. Wurdeman’s offense stalled, while Ferguson gained the advantage with takedowns in the 6-1 decision.
Scottsbluff’s Genaro Gurrola at 285 pounds, Kevin Price at 113 pounds, and Davonte Gutierrez at 120 pounds, rattled off first-period pins against Gering’s Austin Duncan, Luciano Palomo and Nathan Van Anne, respectively, to close out the session. Gering forfeited at 106.
Gering’s Julian Corona at 126 pounds, Aaron Tovar at 132 pounds, and Austin Garcia at 138 pounds lost their opening round matches to the Bearcats’ Jerryd Hernandez, Mario Ybarra and Rob Price in the opening matches to put Gering in the hole. Scottsbluff’s Rob Price won by major decision.
The Bulldogs varsity heads to the Chadron Invite over the weekend, Jan. 22-23, while the junior varsity will travel across the state line for the Lingle-Fort Laramie Tournament. Gering goes on the road to take on the Alliance Bulldogs in its next dual on Jan. 26.
Gering’s next home dual is on Jan. 28 against the Torrington (Wyo.) Trail Blazers.
