Gering High School’s Distributive Education Club of America spent last weekend at the state conference in Lincoln and qualified seven members for the upcoming International Career Development Conference.
This is the fifth year Gering has had a DECA program. At the state competition, students completed a comprehensive exam and participated in two role play simulations. Some students also presented marketing research projects in the areas of Financial Operations, Fashion and Merchandising, and Independent Business Plan.
“The team exceeded my expectations,” said sponsor Broc Brown. “We had seven kids qualify for nationals and another five are eligible. We could have as many as 10 going, depending on the expense.”
To qualify for the National conference, students had to place in the top three of their event. At the National conference Gering students will join 17,000+ other students from across the country to complete in Marketing and Business events.
The International Career Development Conference is scheduled for April 23 – 27 in Nashville, Tenn.
“We had our first national finalist last year,” Brown said. “We want to continue to build on that success.”
Qualifying for the national conference at state event were Jon Hastings, who took 1st place in Business Services Marketing. Allie Baird and Collin Potts placed first in Sports and Entertainment Team Decision Making. Allie Boggs and Dalton Scott were in second in Independent Business Plan. Rebecca Boyd took 2nd place in Principles of Business Administration, John Stark was 3rd in Principles of Marketing.
Other top eight finalists included Shelly Reza for Accounting Applications, Megan Copsey for Business Finance Series, Jim Eastman for Quick Serve Restaurant Management, Rebecca Svoboda in Quick Serve Restaurant Management, and Allie Boggs for Sports and Entertainment Marketing Series.
