Back row: Joseph Zammarripa, Daniel Gonzales, Ephroen Lovato and Adam Moreno.
With a track team of 15 members, freshmen are the majority of the Minatare squad. However, Coach Matt Korkow is seeing some solid performances in the early going.
“The girls’ squad is especially making improvements,” Korkow said. “We have a solid 4x800 relay team this year with lots of potential.”
Team members in the 4x800 event are Franki Doty, Jackie Martinez, Iran Ramirez and Maddie Schlosser-Ross.
For the boys, sophomore Adam Moreno has been performing well in the 800 meter event. Freshman Ephroen Lovato has been impressive as Minatare’s thrower, along with Daniel Gonzales as their long jumper and sprinter.
“Their nerves are what we need to work on, even though we’ve been in two meets so far,” Korkow said. “They’re mostly freshmen and are still nervous about meets. Once they get that under control, they should see huge improvements in distances and time.”
He added that to help with the team’s nerves, he reminds them all the meets are practice until they get to the district meet.
“The 4x800 team has a good chance in our district to make the state meet,” Korkow said. “They just need to keep shaving off time and pushing themselves on that second lap. I’d also like to see Adam make it to state in the 800. Overall, I want to see the team keep improving themselves and making personal records every week.”
Korkow is assisted in coaching duties by Schyler Ferguson and Steven Foster.
