Edward Grentz, a four-year standout in both cross country and track for Mitchell High School, will compete in those events this fall for the Chadron State College Eagles.
Cross country coach Mike Harriger called Grentz a “really driven kid” that CSC will be lucky to have on the team.
“I was looking at other schools but chose Chadron because I like the coach and the program,” Grentz said. “They’ve been really successful the last couple of years and I know some members of the team. They’re very competitive.”
He added that some teammates have gone on to be very successful at the college level, and he sees that winning tradition continuing in the future. “I’ll miss the atmosphere here at Mitchell,” he said. “It’s been very motivational and all of us encourage each other along the way. It helps everyone become better athletes. It’s also good to see we can compete against some of the larger schools and be successful. That shows we work hard.”
Track coach Michelle Peters said Grentz is a “low maintenance” and self-motivated person. “When he sets his mind to do something, he goes after it,” she said. “It’s been an excellent time spending four years with him on the team.”
Grentz plans to major in criminal justice with an emphasis in law enforcement.
