Jerry Purvis/Gering Citizen First State Bank employees and staff from United Way of Western Nebraska test the biodegradable paint that will be used in the fourth annual United Way Color Dash, scheduled for May 21.
Runners and walkers sporting splashes of color will be winding their way through Gering on Saturday, May 21, as United Way of Western Nebraska hosts its fourth annual Color Dash. The event has been sponsored by First State Bank since its inception.
“Our committee put their minds together four years ago and wanted to come up with an event that was fun and not just asking people for money,” said Jeana Allen, United Way special events coordinator. “The color dash was a new trend at the time so we snatched it up and it’s been very popular and one of the biggest fun runs in our community.”
The annual Color Dash attracts about 1,000 participants every year, although Allen said they have room for 2,000, which she said would be a great thing to see. The 5K fun run/walk starts at 8 a.m. at Five Rocks Amphitheater as the route winds through Gering and back. Along the route, a number of local businesses will set up “splash stations” to douse runners in non-toxic, biodegradable paint.
Local businesses and sponsors will also be passing out goodies to the participants along the route. A color dance party will be happening at Five Rocks as runners cross the finish line.
“The Color Dash kicks off our 2016-2017 campaign season,” Allen said. “The golf tournament comes up on June 6 and the Rubber Duck Dash is July 30. We’ll have a lot of special events going on the next couple of months to help United Way support a number of local non-profit agencies throughout our community and into eastern Wyoming. All those funds go to people in need.”
Participants don’t need to be a runner, the Color Dash is about spending a color-crazy day in a family-friendly environment, covering some beautiful scenery to support United Way.
Registration for the Color Dash is $40 for adults, $30 for students age 6-16, and $10 for kids age 5 and under. People can register online at unitedwayofwesternnebraska.com.
