Jerry Purvis/Gering Citizen This 2016 Chevrolet Camaro LT will be awarded as the grand prize at this year’s United Way Rubber Duck Dash, coming up July 30 at the YMCA Trails West Camp in Riverside Park.
In early August, someone in the community will be driving a new Chevy Camaro LT, this year’s grand prize in the 19th annual Rubber Duck Dash sponsored by the United Way of Western Nebraska.
The annual event is the major fundraiser for United Way as they support 16 agencies that meet community needs in so many different ways.
United Way Special Events Coordinator Jeana Allen helped unveil the new car with TEAM Chevrolet, the event’s title sponsor and car donor. “Ducks are now available for sale and will be up until race time the morning of July 30,” Allen said.
“This year we’re hoping to sell all 20,000 ducks,” said Special Events Committee Co-Chair Brady Shaul. “We’re hoping the river will go down by then so we can get the ducks in the water. People like to watch the ducks float down the river.”
Individual ducks are $5 each. A Quacky Bunch of five ducks and a Quack Sack of sponsor coupons is $25. A Quacker’s Dozen is also available for $60, which includes 13 ducks and a Quack Sack.
Forms are available from businesses throughout the community. Just fill out the form, return it to TEAM Chevrolet or Duck Central at the United Way offices at 1517 Broadway in downtown Scottsbluff, and you’re ready for the duck dash.
Activities for the Rubber Duck Dash start at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, at the YMCA Trails West Camp in Riverside Park in Scottsbluff. There are all kinds of kids’ games and activities for the entire family. Several United Way member agencies will also be there for people to learn about what they do. The ducks go into the river at 10:30 a.m.
The first duck to cross the finish line will win a 2016 Chevrolet Camaro LT, donated by TEAM Chevrolet. Second prize is a 4-wheel drive Honda Pioneer Side-by-Side from Sandberg Honda. Numerous other prizes are also available for the winners.
United Way is also seeking volunteers for the day of the Duck Dash. Persons must be at least 18 to go into the river to collect the ducks as they cross the finish line, and there are several other opportunities available. Call the United Way office at 308-635-2522 for details.
“The grand prize Camaro is a super car, but we really like to support United Way and the community,” said Kent Holub of title sponsor TEAM Chevrolet. “It’s amazing how the people in the valley support our organizations that need funds to operate.
Winning the car is just a bonus, because we’re all about helping people in the community.”
The new Camaro is decorated in a flag-inspired patriotic theme to go along with this year’s Rubber Duck Dash theme, “United We Quack.”
