|Gering tennis boys look for .500+ season|
|August 19, 2016 Jerry Purvis|
After taking a hit last year with losing four starters to graduation, the Gering boys’ tennis team will spend the 2016 season rebuilding, but plan to win at least half of their matches before the state tournament. Gering plays in Class B in the Western Conference.
Players returning for another season include Tyler Tjaden, Josh Wilson, Derek Sabala, Brock Parker and Grant Maser. The squad if filled out with newer players in Dyson Dollarhide, Mark Karpf, Cole Bevins and Caleb Andrews. Juan Aguilar, who is coming off an injury, is expected to join the team soon as a returner.
“This year is a complete change,” said Coach Justin Reinmuth, now in his fourth year of coaching the boy’s team. “The seniors we lost were at the top for us, so we pretty much have to restructure our entire varsity lineup.”
He said the team always enjoys playing against Scottsbluff, their top rival in the area. They will also play Alliance a number of times during the season in triangular matches.
“We’re also looking forward to the McCook Invite,” Reinmuth said. “It’s fun to go down there and it’s usually a good day for tennis. As for our toughest invites this year, it will probably be North Platte and Lexington. Both of them usually have some teams that are in Class A.”
He added that by the end of the season, he’d like the team to be on the top side of .500. “It would be nice to win at least half our meets this season, but it’s going to be a stretch. We’re going up against a very deep team in Scottsbluff that has some really good seniors this year.”
So for this season, Reinmuth said he plans to recruit some more players who might be interested in playing, and to continue building the program.
The Gering boys’ tennis team opens its season on Aug. 25 at Scottsbluff for a triangular match to include Alliance.
