Last year, the Banner County Wildcats six-man football team had to cancel most of its season due to injuries. They’re back for 2016 to start over and make a mark in the Minuteman Activities Conference.
Losing two seniors from last year, the Wildcats return 11 players: two seniors, two juniors, and the rest are freshmen.
“We’re just trying to get better every day,” said first year Head Coach Charles Jones. “We’re a young team, but we’ve made some good progress and I’m happy with where we are this early in the season.”
Jones said with 25 teams playing six-man football in the area, teams have been grouped into regions that allow for less travel time for games. Cody-Kilgore, in Cherry County, is the farthest the Wildcats have to travel this season.
“All the kids are stepping up for the challenge,” Jones said. “With last year off, most of the players are pretty new. They’ve really caught on quickly to our new system and I’m looking forward to seeing how that works out during games.”
Banner County opens its season today (Aug. 26) on the road at Cody-Kilgore. Jones said it will be a good challenge, as they field a solid team with some returners who are All-State caliber. “If we execute our way and do what we need to do, we should be competitive. That’s what I’ve been preaching to the kids – stay competitive and give yourselves a chance.”
Jones said that although this is a new team, he wants to win a few games and see where they rank at the end of the season.
