Gering High School senior Jaylen Beam, daughter of Dan and Jadie Beam, has signed a letter of intent to play golf for Coach Warren Kuhl at Midland University in Fremont in the fall of 2017.
Jaylen was a three-year varsity letter winner for Coach Jessica Boswell. She qualified for the state golf tournament in her sophomore and senior years.
“The Midland coach contacted me earlier in the year so I went down to visit,” she said. “I fell in love with the school. Ever since then, I knew that’s where I would be going.”
After another visit on Oct. 28, Jaylen signed to play for the golf team. She has a sister attending the university at Lincoln, so she has family in the area.
“The girls were so welcoming although we’d just met,” she said. “I felt like part of the team. I also like what the coach stands for. He wants us to succeed in school as well as golf.”
While she’s looking forward to playing golf at the college level, Jaylen said she’d miss her friends in Gering. “The team and the coach became like a second family to me. They had my back and were always there for a good laugh. I’ll miss all the fun times we had.”
Jessica Boswell, Jaylen’s coach at Gering, said she’s been a great asset to the team. “She really stepped up as a leader her junior and senior year and spent lots of time during the summer at the golf course playing and practicing.”
Boswell thinks Jaylen will be a strong addition to the Midland team over the next four years. “She really enjoys golfing and as her coach it makes me happy that she gets to continue to play competitively in college. The coach and players at Midland are lucky to get to have her as part of their team.”
Warren Kuhl, golf coach at Midland, agreed. “I’m excited to have Jaylen join us.”
