Worden makes Sports Illustrated

Aubree Worden is not just any face in the crowd; she’s a top athlete from Scottsbluff whose record-breaking running has landed her in the pages of Sports Illustrated.

The high school senior was featured in the “Faces in the Crowd” section of the Nov. 15 issue of Sports Illustrated, a magazine that typically fills its pages with the top athletes in professional and college sports. The section highlights impressive but not so well-known athletes for their outstanding accomplishments.

“Aubree, a senior at Scottsbluff High, set a state meet record in the 4K (14:23) in winning her third straight Class B title and her second all-class title,” the article states. “In the spring she defended her all-state title in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters and was named Gatorade Nebraska runner of the year in both cross-country and track and field.”

A proud grandfather, Roger Schaub stopped by the Gering Citizen to share a copy of the magazine. He points out that Aubree has made quite a name for herself as a runner in the Scottsbluff Public Schools. The high school senior has records at Scottsbluff High School in the 800 and the mile, he said, adding that she comes by it naturally. Her father, Scotts Bluff County Judge Jamie Worden, holds the record in the 100 and 200 at the school; her mother, Joni Worden, also holds the record at Scottsbluff High School in the 100 and 200 sprints.

“They have six records between the three of them,” Schaub said.

He and his wife, Shirley Schaub, have faithfully followed Aubree’s running career, traveling all the way to Idaho, Oregon and across the state of Nebraska for meets and events.

“She has surprised us so many times with what she’s done. We’ve been to every cross country meet and every track meet that she’s been in, in the last three years,” he said. “We have no regrets that we didn’t miss any.”

Aubree hopes to continue her running career in college and is in the process of visiting schools.
